Smoking in Paradise
24 10 2007Who said smoking is bad for your health?
My father has been smoking at least two packs a day for the last 40 years and he is very much healthy at the age of almost seventy. I bet during his military years, when the government provide free cigarettes to the army, he even smokes more. He is the living prove to those who claims smoking is bad for your health.
Well, that was my arguments for as many years as I can remember.
In 1997, my eldest kid, Al who was only seven months old could not sleep the whole night. He cried and cried and not even wanted to drink his milk. First thing in the morning, we brought him to see the paediatrician and upon seeing his condition, he told us, Al had an episode of Asthma attack. If the condition prolong, he needs to be hospitalised for treatment. We discuss on all the possibilities of what triggers the attack and the conclusion pointed directly to my smoking habit.
Al’s condition deteriorated further. I cannot help but blame myself and immediately threw the pack away, swear not to smoke again.
Upon seeing Al being tortured with all the procedures and therapies, I knew, I love Al more than my smoking habit. No tears can reduce the pain of inflicting damage to your kids.
Six months later, I am back puffing my way to paradise.
In 2003, when the Cardiologist from IJN, my Buddy Dr. Joshi rang me at the office about my Dad, who was hospitalised for heart complication, I am still puffing away almost 40 sticks a day. But, that very night, after the scan result of my Dad’s lung come out, I left Dr. Joshi’s office with blurry vision. My watery eyes cannot hide my sadness. It is lung cancer.
On my way back, I wind down the window and throw a still half pack Marlboro out. Never to smoke again, but, again, only for the next three months.
My Dad passed away due to the lung failure cost by the cancer. If that will not be a good reason for me to quit smoking, than nothing will. I decided to part my way again with the cigarette once and for ever. God is on my side as always.
For almost two years I off the fags. Life is not easy. Smoking is heaven, not smoking is hell. I can never understand how people said life is better without cigarette. Immediately after quitting, you are alone facing the withdrawal syndrome.
First, you get tired easily on the football field. Second, your tempers started to fly unguided. Not to mention putting another ten to fifteen Kilo also instantly and having people staring at your double chin even went you are having tea with Maya Karin.
But the worst was when you are having the most intimate moments with your love one.
Ooops I did it again! Just five minutes and you are off searching for the remote control to watch SpongeBob in the middle of the night not to turn to your partner whom started to lose patience with your rabbit stunt. There goes the Arabian Stallion whom used to a marathon of passions. Damn.
I still remember, the day I whispered to my “football buddy” doctor, behind the goal post about what happen, he just calmly said, well ‘it happens’. What!!! You bloody mean that I have to live like this for the rest of my entire youthful life?
‘It will take times before your body could adjust to the lacking of nicotine in its system’. I demanded for him to give me a straight answer for the duration of this ‘withdrawal syndrome’. He has no scientific answer for it as human bodies differs.
“Hey doc! What about my UMBRO six studs stick to your mouth!” I am so disgusted.
Cigarette is the best buddy a man can have. It is undeniable.
Who will be there to entertain you when you are kept waiting for people who are late for the meeting. Do you think people will be on time for the meeting just because you have quit smoking?
Do you think you wife will stay all night with a bowl of Bovril for you when you have to face the lap top to meet the tomorrow morning presentation?
Do you think, Alex Ferguson care to share his chewing gum with you when Arsenal is leading Manchester United by a goal with only stoppage time to play?
No one can ever take the role like you best buddy you called Ciggie! She’s the babe; she’s the hottest of all.
In 2005, I started dating my Ciggie again and she the most loyal one till today.
Over the years, long before I divorced her and make a comeback (three times altogether), Ciggie without fail is there for me, day or night, rain or shine. I never share anything like what I share with Ciggie.
I wrote almost 50 scripts with Ciggie, I directed more than 200 hours of airtime with her, I cried and laugh with her between my finger and lips.
Then, you come to think of it, is this the real you? Is Ciggie is that loyal or just after your cash? Is Ciggie actually making you look good or it is just your illusion?
Ciggie without fail, making me smells like an ashtray just five minutes after I splash the Aramis After Shave. Ciggie without fail taking me away over and over again from my kids because she is bad for them. Not to mention the many times she cause me to be late for a meeting because I need to detour to the closest Seven Eleven.
Because of Ciggie, I have missed at least 4 of Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal as my beloved Rifqi had banned me to take Ciggie with me for the live session with Manchester United.
Because of Ciggie, I have plenty of sleepless night, because Seven Eleven is nowhere near the place I am staying.
Because of Ciggie, my gum is constantly bleeding as I had to use the hardest bristle to remove all her stain on my teeth.
Some even said, I should blame Ciggie for the hair that soon going to be history from my head.
As I am writing this, I am staring at the divorce letter for Ciggie in the form of a bottle of syrup called NUTRA CRAVE X. It is distributed by MUJARAB ENTERPRISE SDN BHD (498053-P) and the syrup is licence under The Ministry of Health (Licence number MAL 06061486 TC). The syrup contains cocktails of Plumeria, Melastoma and Royal Jelly.
I will not recommend this product to those readers who are still wants to continue smoking. The reason is only because, it is very effective. But to those who have been tinkering about divorcing the puffing habit, this is worth dozens of fags.
To those mothers who have schooling kids who just pick up this smoking habit, this is an easy solution for your worries. To those daughters who are worried about your dad’s smoking habit, maybe, on his next birthday, this shall be your gift to him.
I will not say more, but trying to think what I should tell my ‘roommate’ about the forthcoming rabbit stunt!
For more information on NUTRA CRAVE X, please contact tel: 09 771 4270 / 09 771 4271, fax: 09 771 4272. Or browse the site at www.antismoking.com.my.

Where is My YB – The Aftermath
13 10 2007Kickdefella received below comments by readers regarding the article about five families in Kampung Demit.
Nik Bahrum | IP: 219.93.152.3
drz | IP: 219.93.152.3
Sheikh;
You are very unfair to publish this article without asking the approprite person (?Ust Mat Iraq) what has he done to help the poor. I’m quite sure that he is not as ugly as published here. At least he help the other poor people and you didn’t the one that he help.
You are unfair in bleming him 100%. He may be overlook in these case but he is not unresponsible person. There is a system here as in other place. May be the penghulu or the neighbour is not fuctioning to inform the YB. How many time you have meet him to tell about these case? He may be not the candidate anymore after this term not because he is bad but because there is better person. No need for you to to give bad image of him.
Thank you for every effort you did to help the poor here. May Allah bless you. Some of the PAS member actually very wara’ and they don’t want the others know what the did. And it does’t mean that they are less work because no publicity. May Allah judge them in appropriate way.

Terima kasih krn memaklumkan.
Antara penerangan kami;
Selamat Hari Raya Maaf Zahir Batin.
Regard,
Pemuda Demit

Kawasan beliau bukan sahaja Salor, malah Pasir Tumboh & DEMIT termasuk sekali.
Harap Bro dapat perbetulkan berita diatas.
wassalam.

Where is my YB? (Update)
9 10 2007Update 10 Oct 2007
Kickdefella readers, Mr ISA and MR MALIK have officially adopted the five families below for the Raya. Bariah has just confirmed receiving the online transfer by both generous reader. Mr. ISA has shared his Raya bonus from his company with the five families.
On behalf of those families, we wished to thank all readers for the support. Thanks.
Original Post
Dear folks,
When I started Kickdefella, it is not all about kicking Dollah but to kick who deserved to be kicked. Me included.
Yesterday, Bariah received online transfer from Mr. A. Malik Daud for her Ramadan Charity. Let us thank our fellow reader for the remembrance. As time constrain, we decided for Bariah to hand over the goodies herself. Fortunately, we got the information regarding five families in Kg. Demit who are living well below poverty line.
Family 1
90 years old Granny who live on her own. She has no income whatsoever and has no children. She has been living on the sympathy of her neighbours. She is suffering from high blood pressure, diabetic and asthma. She even does not have the strength to cook anymore.
Family 2
Sister of the 90 years old Granny, a sixty plus years old single mother with disable daughter. Her daughter is paralysed since small. She is not working because her daughter needs her full attention.
Family 3
Pak Cik Yusuf, who is in his late sixty. He has one kid schooling in MRSM Perak and he also has a 20 years old daughter who is mentally retarded and bedridden since born. Pak Cik Yusuf has to take care of her daughter including giving her bath as the result it is almost impossible for him to leave the house.
Family 4
46 years old blind man with 38 years old wife. They have an 8 years old daughter. The wife work as a babysitter for two of the neighbour kids. They live on a piece of land own by one of the villagers. Their house is built through the donation from the neighbourhood.
Family 5
Encik Ibrahim and Kak Som. Encik Ibrahim formerly worked as a masseur and since December last year he is bedridden after suffering from stroke. Half of his body is paralysed. Kak Som is now the sole breadwinner of the family with a daughter who is still schooling. Kak Som’s income is RM13.00 per day.
Encik Ibrahim was carried by the neighbours to my house during our last hamper giving session. He caught the eye of YB. Dato’ Husam Musa who instructed me to get a wheelchair for Encik Ibrahim immediately so he can be a bit mobile for the raya.
My question
None of this family ever received any financial support neither from the state welfare department nor from their State Assemblyman. I knew that each constituency are flooded with people holding various political appointee roles that should be going around their neighbourhood and sending back information to their YB.
Kg. Demit is under State Assembly S 19 DEMIT. The Assemblyman is YB. Dato’ Muhammad Daud a.k.a Ustaz Mat Iraq who is also “Ketua Dewan Ulamak PAS Pusat”.
When I brought YB. Salahuddin Ayub, the Member of Parliament for Kubang Kerian, one neighbour who only want to be known as Tok Wan has this to say, “We are very disappointed with our State Assemblyman…” and in his own word he said “Tok Wakil sini, kalau jemput makan kenduri pong tok mari, kalau royat ada ore mati pun dio buat tok tahu. Tok rajin nok cara ke penduduk kapung demit ni”.
Literary, Tok Wan complained that the Assemblyman did not bother to be closed with the people here. On previous occasion, Tok Wan who is a lifetime PAS supporter said he regretted the choice made by Tuan Guru Nik Abdul Aziz for putting such incapable personalities to be the State Assemblyman for Demit.
This reminded me to a senior lecturer in UTAR, an Indian whom upon knowing that I am coming back to Kelantan, said this “Syed, serving people is serving God!”
I knew that the State under the ruling of Tuan Guru is flooded with various schemes to help the poor, the needy, the single parent, the disable, the senior citizen etc, etc.
When I single out this YB, it is without prejudice. This posting is not done in bad faith. This posting is done out of love to Kelantan, Kelantanese and the leadership of Tuan Guru.
While, UMNO’s Dato’ Muhammad Ghani is working hard to unseat PAS in Demit, I know, people like Tok Wan, Kak Som and Encik Ibrahim will continue to vote for PAS till death do them apart. So do many Kelantanese.
I still believe in the relationship between human and other human needs to be perfected before we could build our relationship between human and the Almighty. Is it fair for these YBs to take their salary as YBs when they did not take care of their constituents? While I leave that to the Almighty to decide, it’s time for those in power stop preaching what they believe but to perform what we believe is their duty to us.

Al Fatihah
7 10 2007Today marks the fourth year, our beloved father, Lt. Col. (Rtd) Syed Abdul Aziz Al Bukhary left us.
We were all by his side the morning of 7th October 2003. In the morning, he looked very cheerful. Although warded in the Intensive Care Unit, he managed to attend to all the visitors who swamped the lobby to meet him. Mostly are the extended family members and also family friends.
I only managed to spend less than five minutes with him in the morning. Our trademark conversation pursue with much interference from those waiting to see him. Bah asked me, “When did you arrive back?” I just smile, not wanting to lie to him about my non-attendance for the past few days.
“How is Baling?” He asked thinking that I just arrived back from filming in Baling, Kedah.
“How are you feeling?” I quipped.
“No good, tired” and I was told that he refused to let the doctor to do the tapping to remove the fluid from his lung. He has been so used to that procedure before, almost a weekly affair for him.
“I shall be outside if you need me” that was our last conversation.
Around two thirty, we were call in by the doctor and we were informed that Bah’s blood pressure has been constant in heading south.
I decided to make a move and settle everything at home and comeback later. Before I left, I walk towards his bed but stop few meters away as I saw he was talking to his sister. I left without saying anything.
I made a brief stop at Jaya Supermarket to buy some groceries as I anticipated that I shall be spending all night at the hospital. When I reached home around four pm, my eldest sister rang me and said that Bah has slipped into uncertainty. He is between conscious and unconscious.
It took me almost an hour to reach the hospital and met my sister from Bangi at the car park. As I made my way towards the bed, I saw my other sisters and my brother was there with my step mum. Next to my father, stand a man in olive green suit.
I saw my father was lying there and breathing like ‘fish out of the water’. Both his eyes were wide open almost staring at the ceiling. Nevertheless, the man n the olive green suit really caught me.
In the nick of time, my mind told me that he must be the representative from the hospital. “This must be it”, I said.
He kept staring at the monitor with all the stats. Whenever the oxygen level increased, he will look at my father. Whenever the oxygen level drop to zero, he will shake his head and throw his view outside the window where the crows were flying home.
After almost an hour, he made few step back and turn to me, only then I realised, that he is Tun Hanif, my father’s neighbour and pillar of strength. Exactly a year before that day, Tun Hanif had financed my father’s medical trip and medication in Kunming, China. Tun excused himself and left.
I took over the position and slipped my hand under his neck and raise his head a bit. I whispered the syahadat few times followed by few verses from the Quran.
About seven something, my brother and I went down for cigarette. We just inhaled our Marlboro and Dunhill without any conversation. Deep inside, we knew were going to miss the third member of the smoking club. We were the two culprits that always sneak the ciggie to Bah after he officially quit smoking when he was diagnosed with lung cancer.
While my brother continued with his second stick, I made my way back to the ward. Around seven-thirty pm, the nurse-in-charge came to us and told us that the time has come to bid farewell. Until today, I am still amused by such accuracy.
He passed away peacefully surrounded by all his children and family members.
Tuhanku
Dalam termangu
Aku masih menyebut namamu
Biar susah sungguh
mengingat Kau penuh seluruh
CahayaMu panas suci
tinggal kerdip lilin di kelam sunyi
Tuhanku
aku hilang bentuk
remuk
Tuhanku
aku mengembara di negeri asing
Tuhanku
di pintuMu aku mengetuk
aku tidak bisa berpaling
(Chairil Anwar – 13 November 1943)

Ramadan Charity – Finale
6 10 2007
This is the most meaningful Ramadan for the blogosphere and for me. For many months since I operated Kickdefella, it is nothing but Dollah bashing. If I never met Dato’ Husam Musa, I will never know, when will be the day I will truly understand, the other side of the world, which I am becoming so used to.
God works in such mysterious ways. He always did and, forever will.
During my time spent with YB Datuk Effendi Norwawi, I always heard (Datin) Tiara saying, how Datuk kept mumbling about his position as Minister of Agricultural (then) had opened his eye and pushed him closer to God.
My first assignment with Dato’ Husam when I began my service in Kelantan, I was brought to Kg. Sungai Keladi where we visited the poor. It kept me thinking until today, how lucky my kids are. How lucky I am as a father, to be able to give all the necessities to them. What about those who are unlucky? What about their kids? What about spreading a bit of our luck to them? How?
When Bariah told me about her Charity Plan, my respond was, let me put it on Kickdefella, I bet your charity drive will get overwhelming respond. Off cause, I was joking. Yes, I admit it now, that I was joking then.
Before I posted it on Kickdefella, the fund she had collected were merely enough for 30 hampers. At the end of this evening, she has managed to hand over 100 hampers to the needy. These mean Kickdefella readers had delivered 60 more smiles to the poor and needy.
Through this small and humble charity drive, Bariah collected about RM3,000. The humble amount in actual fact has become a mountain consisting of 500 kg grain, 200 kg of sugar, 200 kg of flour, 300 kg of cooking oil, plus, dozens of biscuits and cordials.
My only contribution was hitting the ‘ENTER’ key on my keyboard and sent the posting to the blogosphere, yet, I felt so proud.
Let me take this opportunity to thank all my readers whom has contribute in all sort of ways known to mankind. My contribution merely few paragraph of broken English, yet, you guys has managed to turn those grammatically problematic Kelantanese English into nothing but Gold.
This evening, we, yes, you, Bariah and me, we gave away another 40 hampers, to the senior citizens, single parents and the orphans of Kampong Demit in Kubang Kerian.
The simple ceremony was done at my place, where Dato’ Husam Musa, although very tired with his hectic schedule, managed to join in and spread the smile. Besides giving away those 40 hampers, Dato’ Husam also took the opportunity to give his personal contribution in cash.

On behalf of the people in Kampong Demit, we wish to thank Mr. Danali, Papa Monsterball, Mr. A. Aziz Othman, Mr. Mohd Isa Mansor, Ms. Yaya, Ms. Intan, Mr. Afiq and Mr. Roslan for spreading the smiles to those 40 receivers.
As Ramadan came to it last 7 days, and as we closed the curtain for this Ramadan Charity drive, I hope this is not the end but the beginning, which will mark the new meaning in the blogosphere.
God bless us, Malaysian!

Oh God, please bless our land, where the unfortunate and the poor, will find peace.
